Corporate Identification Number

What is Corporate Identification Number?

A corporate Identification Number, also known as CIN, is a unique identification number assigned by the Registrar of Companies (ROC) to the companies registered in India. The CIN is given to the companies by ROC while issuing the registration certificate.

It is a 21-digit alphanumeric code that defines a unique identity of a company. This is an important number as every company must mention this unique CIN number on the forms that are to be submitted to the MCA (Ministry of Corporate Affairs). Additionally, CIN is not given to the Limited Liability Partnerships (LLP) that are registered in India.

As per Section 12(3) (c) of the Companies Act, 2013, every company must mention its CIN in the documents.

Listed are some of the important documents:

  • Receipts
  • Letterheads
  • Invoices
  • Annual Reports
  • Bill heads
  • Business letters
  • All e-forms on the portal of the Ministry of Corporate Affairs(MCA).

Importance of Corporate Identification Number

The CIN is used to track all the activities and aspects of a company from its incorporation by the ROC and is needed to be provided on all the transactions with that respective ROC.

It has its own meaning and is easily translatable and helps in finding basic information about the company. You can use the CIN to find the primary details of the company which is registered in the country under MCA.
